We live in a world where effective communication is essential for everyday life, be it school, work or our social lives, where we network with potential clients or hope to find that special someone. I believe effective communication is the key to attaining my goals, both personal and business. As human beings, we have an innate desire to interact with others, which is why communication is crucial.
Communication skills are important so as to avoid misunderstandings and inefficiency. Precious time and effort can be saved by being clear, concise and articulate and using the right gestures. In a job interview, effective communication is an important factor needed to clinch that dream job. It is also a decisive factor in choosing managers, which will help me stand out from many others who possess equally good grades.
Actively listening to what others are saying is just as important as speaking well when it comes to communication. According to studies, we remember only about 25-50% of what we hear! Improving my listening skills is crucial not only for being more productive at teamwork and workplace; it can also gain me lasting friendships and relationships.
The world encompasses a diverse group of people. The key to effective communication is to understand that not everyone will be able to see eye to eye about each issue, and to be accepting towards other’s opinions, which is important for teamwork. The background of the audience has to be kept in mind, so as to prevent miscommunication or offending anybody, and to give successful presentations.
Our words are a reflection of our character and a form given to our innermost thoughts. What I say or how I react can make or break a relationship or career, which makes communication of utmost importance to me.
Hey hey Renuka. I agree with you that effective commuication is important in our everyday lives. It is important wherever we are; be it in school, at home, at work or at play. In your post, you mentioned that effective communication can help us to improve efficiency and attain our goals. I totally agree with you on that. If there is miscommunication, misunderstandings may arise. This will result in time being wasted to resolve conflicting issues and in turn slows down our efficiency. Learning effective communication skills will also aid us in getting a job. In this competitive society, i feel that many people have the qualifications but lack the skills of effective communication. Thus, by learning how to communicate effectively with others, we will then be able to stand out among all others.
ReplyDeleteIn the second half of the post, you mentioned that it is important to keep in mind the background of the audience to prevent miscommunications. I agreed with you on this too! We should also maintain a positve tone and attitude when communicating with others. At the end, you mentioned that "our words are a reflection of our character and a form given to our innermost thoughts". Although this may be true, I think that sometimes we should not be too direct and harsh so as not to hurt other people's feelings.
Renuka, your post is inspiring. After reading your post, i learnt that effective communication is not only important in school but it is also important in helping us to attain our goals such as getting our dream job.
Hi Renuka!
ReplyDeleteI personally feel the same way about communication errors – a big reason why they are undesirable is that they cause inefficiency. I feel that this is especially relevant in the busy lives we lead, with the increase in the number of communication mediums that didn’t previously exist, like emails, instant message, and blogging. Although they appear to be similar, I think that they each have nuances that need to be considered. It can be said that we have ‘more things to learn’ now.
You also brought up a good point about active listening, which not many other people blogged about. I agree that it is important, and perhaps something people miss out because listening is viewed as a ‘passive’ activity. Thank you for highlighting its importance to us!
Gillian
Hi, Renuka!
ReplyDeleteThe points of view you related to the importance of communication and teamwork is very impressive for people to understand that communication is important anywhere. The part which I like most in your post is that you mentioned that listening is also important for communication, which mostly will be ignored by many people. In my opinion, instead showing how you are active or talkative, the best way to show friendliness is to listen to one person carefully and try to understand it. Therefore, when a person shows more attention to others’ words and feelings during a conversation, not just talking a lot to show off his or her talent for speaking, this person is on the way to grasp the basis of effective communication.
Hey Renuka,
ReplyDeleteSry abt late reply..blogspot is blocked in China =[
Haha i think your post is interesting. For one, you mention abt communication as a basic human need, similar to the point that Zhou Li has raised, but you also move on to talk abt the importance of listening for effective communication..well thats sth that most of us overlooked coz i guess listening is not as obvious as speaking? But yea its not just that the initiator of the conversation must be articulate, the recipient also needs to be attentive. haha i guess ppl just conveniently forgot feedback mechanism in communication.. well we are all kinda self-centered arent we o_O
However, i do think you may wish to put in more personal examples in your blog since you put it "why is..blahblahblah..important for me", yup you may wish to put it sth like 'we i was attending an interview,i..' instead of 'in a job interview',haha well you might be talking abt the same thing but readers feel different coz your effort to connect with your audience will be more visible in the latter case.
Overall nice blog with a nice topic picture, keep it up man, i see you on Monday =]
