REFLECTIONS ON ORAL PRESENTATION 2

My group recently had its oral presentation, for its project on the problem of congestion in MRTs. My group performed well on the whole. There were good transitions between the speakers. All of us spoke audibly and clearly, at a suitable pace. We maintained eye contact with the audience, and were familiar with the content of our presentation. During the question and answer session, each of the group members had an equal opportunity to voice his opinions and explain. However, the duration of our presentation could have been shorter and more succinct.

I feel that there was an improvement in my performance this presentation, as compared to the previous presentation. I maintained a high level of eye contact with the audience and referred minimally to my cue cards, with the aim of engaging the audience more. I spoke loudly, so my voice was clear and audible. I pronounced my words well and used emphasis. The pace of my speech was steady and my tone was varied. I used hand gestures to aid in the flow of my speech, and made appropriate references to the screen.

One area in which I definitely improved in as compared to the previous presentation was my level of participation in the question and answer session. I gave my opinions and knowledge in response to the questions posed. I sounded more enthusiastic and interested in our project in this presentation, although I could have been more cheerful, so as to endear more to the audience.

One aspect of the content of my presentation that I could have improved on was the cost-benefit analysis of the proposed solutions. The incentive for train companies to adopt our solutions should have been analyzed. The proposed solutions could also have been more detailed, to avoid ambiguity.

I believe that the delivery of our presentation was good, although more effort would be needed to effectively persuade the audience about our solutions.

  1. Hey Renuka:

I agreed on that your team performed well in general, the ppt looks cool. Here are just some points on your post that you may with to think about:

    1. for team performance, maybe you could elaborate a more on the weakness part (duration could be shorter and presentation could be more succinct) all the plus points of the team performance is well-understood, but you may wish to tell us more on how you team did not do well in the two areas you proposed and what can be the possible solutions.

    2. for personal evaluation, i think your points are valid but lack elaboration sometimes. you are more like listing out the plus and minus points of your presentation. evaluation on speed, volume, pace etc are well understood, but maybe you could tell us how you better engage the audience this time? or what are the appropriate references to the screen?

    3. for the areas for improvement, i think you may wish to elaborate more and propose solutions, if possible. For example, when you mention that you could have been more cheerful, what are the possible reasons? stress because speaking in front of class? too much content to cover? and what might be the possible solutions? to better prepare for the presentation? or to pause a bit more for better delivery during presentation?

    Ca tout, all the best=]

  2. Hey Renuka

I think your group did a great job for the oral presentation. However, I feel that your group could have explain more clearly on some points and provide a more detailed analysis on certain points that you all mentioned. For example, you all mentioned about the parallel platform. This will result in taking up more space but how would you all go about resolving this since Singapore faces the problem of land constraints. You all also mentioned about having more competition. However, this may cause train fares to vary drastically and should there be some agency to regulate the prices?

Overall, you did a great job in delivering your content to the audience. You were loud and clear and you made appropriate pauses in your speech. However, you could sound more enthusiastic by varying your tone. It is also great that you made minimal references to the cue cards. This would allow you to have better eye contact with the audience and make you look more enthusiastic.

Your team’s presentation was rather long. You all could have reduced the content and just talk about the main points and the message that you all would like to convey to the audience. This would make your team’s presentation shorter and more succinct.

Overall, you all have done a great job!

  3. Hi Renuka!

I think your group's presentation was quite good and clear! Also, I think it's commendable that the Q&A of your group was quite evenly spread out, something that not all groups (including mine) was able to do. I think it shows that all of you were well prepared and familiar with the content!

Though you did a good job thoroughly explaining what you thought was good about your presentation, I think you could have explained what you meant by your "presentation could have been shorter and more succinct". Although it was mentioned, it seems like you didn't explain it further in the post, which was a bit odd. Furthermore, you also mentioned that the "solutions could also have been more detailed", which is somewhat contradictory. Perhaps you could have clarified that part.

On the whole, I think you could have provided a more balanced blog post by discussing the not-so-satisfactory points of your presentation more in depth, so as to make the reflection more insightful :)

  5. Hey Renuka,
Your team stated your opinions and solutions clearly and convinced the audience of the importance of the problem and the necessity for improvements. But the content of the whole presentation focus on the solutions, not whether the solutions are effective. You mentioned some, but you might discuss more.

It is nice you made improvements and found out your shortcomings and you delivered your part smoothly. But as you mentioned, you need to analysis your content more to get your points across to the audience. And even though you made hand gestures, you did not show them very naturally.
